Local ESSA Forums
Hey everyone! Every region in our state is hosting a forum on the new Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). ESSA is replacing No Child Left Behind and the term “Well Round Education” is replacing Core Subjects. Health and physical education is part of Well Rounded Eduction! This is an amazing step in the right direction for health and physical education, however, there is still plenty of advocacy needed. This forum is a great opportunity for the health and physical educator voices to be heard regarding ESSA. Click here to learn more about ESSA, see a detailed agenda and dates of when a forum will be in you area. Again, I highly encourage you to attend and advocate for health and physical education in our state!

Congratulations to Collin Brooks!
We would like to congratulate our past-president, Collin Brooks
(@collinbrooksie), on becoming a newly elected SHAPE America Board of Director! Fran Cleland, professor in the Department of Kinesiology at West Chester University (WCU) in West Chester, PA, was elected president-elect of the organization and Terri Drain, physical education teacher at Vintage Hills Elementary School in Pleasanton, CA, was elected as a board member alongside Collin. We would also like to congratulate Collin Brooks on being awarded the Mabel Lee Award. SHAPE America gives the award annually to younger members who have demonstrated outstanding potential in scholarship, teaching and/or professional leadership. “Collin’s work helps to engage young professionals who are used to doing things online as well as encourages the older generation to embrace all that technology has to offer,” says Paul Clinton, Northwest District president. Joel Miller: #OSHAPE15 #Physed Teacher of the Year!
Joel Miller, an elementary physical education teacher from the Beaverton School District has become the 2015 Oregon Physical Education Teacher of the year. Joel is in his 16th year teaching elementary PE for the Beaverton SD. For the last 4 years Joel has taught at Sexton Mountain School following 12 years at Greenway School, also in Beaverton.
Joel graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelors of Education in Physical Education and received a Masters in Curriculum & Instruction from Portland State University. Is is apparent that Joel loves what he does; “My passion is teaching students be physically literate athletes.” Students are exposed to many skills/athletic opportunities while focusing on playing well with others and being good sports. They become young experts on how take care of the only bodies while developing habits that help them make good choices to help live a healthy lifestyle. My strengths when teaching physical education include team games, Challenge/Invasion/Problem Solving Games, Field Days, incorporating Tech, teaching sportsmanship, and most importantly, being open to new ideas and innovations.”
Joel is known to his colleagues as a humble, hard working physical educator. Greg Lukshaitis (The SHAPE America National Adapted Physical Education Teacher of the Year) had this to say about Joel; “Joel Miller’s talent in PE is only overshadowed by his humanity! He is kind, positive, humble and generous. He is a pleasure to work with, and I am proud to call him a friend. He deserves this honor and everything positive that comes with it.”
Joel has deeply contributed to the physical education professional learning community in the Beaverton School district. Currently he is part of the Active Students Task Force in Beaverton SD, where the focus is finding ways to increase physical activity opportunities before, during, and after the school day. “My school is currently part of a pilot that is looking at ways to get students moving more in the classroom with Brain Boosts to help in learning” Joel said. Cheryl Wardell (The SHAPE America Northwest District Teacher of the Year), one of Joel’s colleagues has this to say about Joel; “Our Physical Education program in Beaverton would not be where it is today if it was not for Joel Miller. He has been instrumental in developing the elementary physical education program in our district. He has helped develop district learning targets, professional development, and our PE Showcase which demonstrates what we do in PE to thousands of parents, to name a few. He is also the most innovative PE teacher I know.”
Congratulations to Joel Miller! Thanks for your hard work and dedication to improving health and physical education to not only your student’s but those within your district!

The Oregon SHAPE 2015 Conference = A Big Success!
The Oregon SHAPE Conference took place on Saturday, October 10th at Pacific University and was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who made it possible and attended!
It was a beautiful day in Forest Grove!
Our brains were boosted by a great activity put on by Cheryl Wardell first thing in the morning!
Even the Beaverton Superintendent took notice!
Joey Feith gave an amazing keynote about the #Physed Revolution!
He inspired others to use Twitter to connect with colleagues.
After Joey’s Keynote, sessions were underway and attendees were really engaged!
Right before lunch was the assembly meeting. We had a passing of the baton!

Join us on October 10th, 2015 to learn the latest and the best in teaching strategies, ideas, and professional development in the health and physical education field. The conference will be held at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. We have two exciting keynote speakers, amazing featured presenters, and a variety of sessions for you to attend!

Oregon SHAPE Workshop Update
Hi Everyone!
We are so excited for the Oregon SHAPE Workshop tomorrow at Concordia University! We look forward to seeing you there. Here is the latest information with our updated schedule.
Do not forget to bring;
- Water Bottle (fill up on the first floor)
- Your own “smart” device (if you have one!)
- An enthusiastic attitude!
If you are looking for a place to park check out the map here.
When you come into the George R. White Library (GRW) you will be directed to the registration table on the third floor. Here you can sign in and grab a schedule. Breakfast will be located in room 310, and is provided complimentary to each attendee. After breakfast you will have the opportunity to fire up your brain by participating in an Augmented Reality Scavenger Hunt! We will help you get set up for this at the registration table and show you where to go.
The keynote will start at 10:00am in GRW 310, followed by sessions. A polite reminder that while breakfast and snacks will be provided and ample, lunch will be on your own.
